On the Tritiya of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha, on the occasion of Hartalika Teej on Thursday, the married women kept a Nirjala fast with the wish of unbroken good fortune and good luck. In spite of the difficult fast, the faces of the married women continued to glow with enthusiasm and gaiety. In the night, women worship Lord Shiva, Maa Gauri, Ganesh and Kartikeya with full rituals. Women thronged the Shiva temples of the city for worship.
It is believed that in order to get Lord Shiva as her husband, it was Mother Parvati who first observed this fast. Pleased with her tenacity, Lord Shiva accepted her as his wife. Since then the tradition of this fast is going on. Women observe this fast to wish good luck and for the longevity of their husbands. Women observe Nirjala fast.
Worship by making idols of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati with clay or sand. On Wednesday itself, women had bought items for worship and makeup etc. On Thursday, women were excited about Teej. From morning itself, women started getting ready to decorate. Colorful bangles in the hands, put 16 dots on the forehead and did 16 makeup.
In the night, the fasting women made a pavilion with banana leaves and adorned them by installing idols made of raw clay of Shiva and Parvati. Offered milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar and white sweets. In the Belha Devi Dham of the city, there was a crowd of women for darshan and worship. After anointing the Shivling located in the premises, women worshiped them according to the law.
In the Shiva temple located in Dahilamau, as soon as evening came, women queued up for darshan and worship. After ritualistic worship, women performed bhajan kirtan till late night. Apart from this, there was a crowd of women in the Shiva temple located at the roadways bus stand.
Teej festival was celebrated in the localities of the city. Singing stories of Shiva glory and devotional songs throughout the night. The newlyweds and daughters also danced with a jhoom. Like the married women, daughters also keep a fast on Teej with the wish of a good husband. The fasting women took the blessings of their husbands and elders after the puja. Pandit Alok Mishra told that Hartalika Teej has great significance. Women have great faith in this.
