BENGALURU: An Indian student was killed in a gunfight in Ukraine’s eastern city of Kharkiv on Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed.
Naveen Shekharappa, a resident of Chalgare village in Haveri district of Karnataka, was a fourth year medical student at Kharkiv National Medical University. He was living in the bunker under his flat.
According to the students there, Naveen was out to buy food when the explosion took place in the city center around 8:50 am. “A friend of his got a call from Naveen’s mobile. At the other end was a Ukrainian who said that there was an explosion and Naveen was taken to the morgue. Students are inconsistent,” said a student coordinator at the university.

In a tweet, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs said, “It is with deep sadness that we confirm that an Indian student was killed in a gunfight in Kharkiv this morning. The Ministry is in touch with his family. We extend our deepest condolences to the family.” express.” ,
Indian students in Kharkiv have been advised to stay in bunkers and not to venture out. Naveen’s friends said that they are seeking help from the embassy for safe evacuation but have not received any response yet.
Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said on Twitter: “The Foreign Secretary is calling on the Ambassadors of Russia and Ukraine to reiterate our demand for immediate safe passage for Indian citizens who are still in Kharkiv and other conflict-zone cities. ”
Thousands of Indians attend universities in Ukraine and many have been trapped since Russia invaded the former Soviet republic last week.
