Sony Pictures International has acquired the film adaptation rights of popular Indian superhero Shaktimaan. The character initially appeared in a TV series starring Mukesh Khanna.

On Thursday evening, Sony Pictures India made the announcement on Twitter with a short concept video showing the rise of Shaktimaan. The video shows a flying camera and glasses bearing the signature of Shaktimaan’s transformative journalist Gangadhar Shastri, followed by the insignia on the superhero’s chest. The video reads, “As darkness and evil pervade humanity, it is time for it to return.” After this the video explains Shaktimaan’s costume in a better way.

The video was captioned as, “After the super success of many of our superhero films in India and across the world, it’s time for our desi superhero!” In a follow-up tweet, the studio wrote, “We are excited to join hands with Brewing Thoughts Pvt Ltd, and Mukesh KhannaK Bhishma International. Get ready for #Shaktimaan movie; More details coming soon.”
The studio has yet to announce a release date or who will play the character on screen. According to film analyst Taran Adarsh, the project will feature ‘one of India’s leading superstars’ in the lead role and will be directed by ‘Top Naam’. Taran also informed on Instagram that the franchise will be a trilogy.
Shaktimaan was originally a TV series which started airing on Doordarshan in 1997. Starring Mukesh Khanna in the title role, it featured an ensemble cast of Kittu Gidwani, Vaishnavi, Surendra Pal and Tom Alter. The show was a huge success and ran for 450 episodes in almost eight years. The character of Shaktimaan is a supernatural being possessed of mysterious and supernatural powers, tasked with fighting evil in the world by a mystical sect of sages.
The character was conceptualized by Mukesh Khanna in the early 80s. Talking to Screen Magazine in 1997, the actor had said, “In Indian mythology, there are a lot of strong characters, but no super-heroes. We all get to see our Superman or Spiderman, which are alien concepts. So I decided to create an Indian superhero, Shaktimaan, who is born out of a Yagya, and is the result of all the creative energies of the universe.”
In 2020, the actor confirmed that a film trilogy would be made on the character, promising that it would be “bigger than Ra.One and Krish.”
