Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar had reached Kashi at the invitation of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya. 90 years ago he laid the foundation stone for the first branch of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in the village of Dhandhyaneshwar in Varanasi. The invitation to come to Kashi and open a branch was given by Malviya himself when he went to Nagpur.
The former Vice Chancellor of BHU, Dr. Durg Singh Chauhan, Ramkumar Gupta and Japlalji shared that Dr. Hedgewar’s meeting with Golwalkarji, the second Sir Sangh driver, was conducted by Malviyaji in Kashi. Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya arrived in Akola on April 20, 1929 to attend a meeting of the Hindu Mahasabha. Another meeting took place some distance away, and it was also overcrowded. Out of curiosity, he asked what a lot there was, then people said that Dr. Hedgewar got there. Malaviya ji was very impressed when he saw the crowd and decided that I have to meet this person and then go to the headquarters of the sangh and meet him.
Malaviyaji invited Hedgewar to come to Kashi and open a branch. He also offered financial aid to the sangh, which Dr. Saheb politely declined. After that, the doctor went to prison. Savarkar later sent a written invitation to Dr. Hedgewar to come to Kashi by correspondence. Dr. Saheb reached Kashi in 1931. On March 13, a branch was established in the ground near the Dhandhyaneshwar temple near Amrit Bhawan at the Ratan Gate. Due to flooding, the branch was once in Brahmaghat or Bindu Madhav Madhav Maidan and now in Fadnavis Bada.
