Gondola. In order to advance the excavation work of the famous Saryu Canal Dhanai Belt, which was interrupted by the peasant movement, the administration had to be tough. The administration, which took action after 18 years, deployed police on Friday to complete the construction work.
A dozen JCBs and police officers from four police stations, along with a large number of PAC staff, along with Sub Collector Hira Lal Yadav, CO Munna Upadhyay, and officials from the Irrigation Department took the lead in overseeing the construction work.
People were shocked by the sudden deployment of large numbers of police forces in the village of Salpur Dhautal in Karnailganj tehsil. In view of the huge efforts of the police and fire brigade, the protesting farmers did not answer. One kilometer of sewer excavation was due in Salpur Dhautal.
which started today. In addition to Salpur Dhautal, there is also resistance to the digging of canals in Dhani Dhankhar and Parsa Godri. In Parsa Godri, farmers have been protesting for seven months by setting up a pandal in the field themselves. The talks with the officials have often failed.
For this reason, work to excavate the canal was suspended in four places for five years. There are only 1.5 km of excavation work left. If there was no way to be seen in front of the irrigation office, the digging of the canal was started by force. During this time the chief irrigation engineer Satish Kumar, the responsible inspector Karnailganj Santosh Kumar Singh, Kotwal Countryside Vakil Pandey, the responsible police officer Paraspur Sudhir Singh, the sub-inspector Sunil Tiwari and PAC staff were present in large numbers.
In 2002, the excavation work on the Saryu Canal Dhanai Belt was completed. In 2011 the irrigation department showed the completion of the canal works and paid Rs 54 lakh.
When the matter became known, the state government filed a lawsuit against four contractors, including the department’s chief engineer, and initiated proceedings for three times that amount to be recovered.
Farmers say they are not opposed to digging the canal, but if their land is dug now, they should receive compensation under the new district rate. The canal is forcibly dug on their land without compensation, which is an injustice for the farmers.
The canal excavation is only left at 570 meters in Parsa Godri Shivshankar Purva and 1,100 meters in Dhani Dhankhar, Thakurpur. The rest of the canal is done. Work on 56 km of minor from the canal has also been completed.
The farmers of Parsa Godri say that if the acquisition is made in the name of the deceased, it is wrong. In 2019, the irrigation department reached out to JCB to start digging without paying any compensation to the farmers. Which the peasants got mad at.
In 2019, farmers protested against digging in their fields for 38 days. Gyan Chandra Gupta, the then sub-collector of Karnailganj, had gone to the location of the dharna and had promised the farmers compensation from the new circular rate. And not only that, if no compensation is paid then Lekhpal Kanungo had the survey carried out in the village to give land instead of land in the village, but it didn’t work out.
