The project to renew the Varuna River, which was once the hallmark of the city in Varanasi, appears to be completed in five years. The railway has agreed to lead the drains sloping from the STP Chowkaghat in Varuna under the railway line. In such a situation, the Varuna Corridor project can take shape in August. About a year and a half ago, preparations were under way for the start of the Varuna corridor, but it was stopped at the last minute. When the work is complete, the full report will now be sent to the government. In fact, in 2016, work began on the plan to beautify the Varuna River and develop it for tourism. Work on cleaning up the river with Rs 201 crore, making paths, railings, lights, plantations, sitting chairs and five ghats on either side began in March 2016.

The project was supposed to be completed by December 2016, but the work could not be completed even after five years. The main obstacle to this is the diversion of 14 large and hundreds of small drains that fall through pipelines on both banks of the Varuna River. The railroad was hampered in connecting the sewer pipe on both sides of the river to the Chowkaghat sewage pumping station.

However, the railroad has agreed to move the pipeline under the Chowkaghat railway line. The construction of the path on both banks of the river is also in the final phase. The aim is to complete this project in August.VDA is silent about intruders
During the construction of the Varuna corridor itself, the development agency marked 762 interventions on both sides of the corridor. There are 14 large hotels and buildings in them, but action has only been taken until further notice. Then the intruders’ files were suppressed in the VDA. On the other hand, the chief engineer and two engineers on this project were also suspended for negligence.

The rickshaw corridor is also planned
The VDA plans to develop the route of the Varuna corridor as an alternative route into the city. The route is being expanded as an e-rickshaw corridor at a cost of around 1 billion rupees. This route is used for two-wheelers and three-wheelers from Kachari to Varanasi City Station. The project will be completed by September.

Varuna corridor at a glance

Under the supervision of the Ministry of Irrigation, the Varuna Corridor is being built by UPPCL.
– 20 percent increase in costs due to the delay in the plan to be completed in 10 months
– Preparations for launch in 2021 have been made but stopped at the last minute due to unfinished work
Corridor can prove to be a very effective step in saving the existence of the Varuna River

The work completed in August is being reviewed. The work will be completed soon after approval by the railroad near Chowkaghat in Varuna. The detailed project report is then sent to the government. – Kaushal Raj Sharma, District Judge
