A huge plume of black smoke rose from a fuel storage facility in the village of Kalinyvka outside Kyiv on Friday, as AFP reporters saw Russia destroy a military site with Kalibr cruise missiles.

“On the evening of March 24, caliber high-precision sea-based cruise missiles struck a fuel base in the village of Kalinivka near Kyiv,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Moscow claimed it was the largest remaining military fuel storage facility in Ukraine, saying it supplied troops to the central part of the pro-Western country.

Ukraine confirmed the strike, saying it struck around 8 p.m. (0600 GMT) in the village, about 40 kilometers southwest of Kyiv.

Kyiv’s emergency ministry said there was no danger of the fire spreading outside the oil depot.

AFP saw fireballs leaping into the air from the facility, with a small fire blazing from a separate fuel line.

“We saw the explosion, it was huge,” said a security guard at the facility at a checkpoint near the depot, asking not to be identified.

“Luckily, there were no casualties,” he said.
