Beijing:
Beijing on Wednesday described Russia as an “important member” of the G20 after Washington expressed the possibility of ousting Moscow from the grouping.
China has provided a level of diplomatic security to Russia, which has been increasingly isolated over its invasion of Ukraine, with its economy bound by sanctions.
“The G20 is the main forum for international economic cooperation,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters. “Russia is an important member, and no member has the right to expel another country.”
The leaders of the two countries announced a “no boundaries” relationship after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Beijing for the Winter Olympics.
Wang’s remarks came after a briefing by a top Washington security adviser on Tuesday indicated that the US would pressure Russia to withdraw from international forums over its neighbor’s aggression.
Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, said: “On the question of the G20, I would just say this: we believe that it cannot be business as usual for Russia in international institutions and in the international community.”
