- Glenn Weiss will direct the Oscars
- He will direct for the seventh year in a row
- Last year the Oscars were held at an LA train station without a host
The Oscars will have a presenter for the first time since 2018, the broadcaster ABC announced on Tuesday after the TV ratings for the biggest night of the film in recent years collapsed. For the 94th Academy Awards, slated for March 27, Tinseltown’s premier awards show returns to its traditional Dolby Theater in Hollywood. Last year’s unorthodox edition, held at an unhosted Los Angeles train station, was seen by just over 10 million viewers – a 56 percent decrease from 2020, which was already a record low.
“You heard it here first. I can confirm this year’s Oscars will have a host,” said Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, of a virtual panel hosted by the Television Critics Association.
Erwich declined to provide further details, including whether or not Jimmy Kimmel – ABC’s host Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the last two hosted Oscars in 2017 and 2018 – to return. “Maybe it’s me,” he quipped.
In 2019, comedian Kevin Hart pulled out of the Academy Awards after homophobic tweets resurfaced a few years earlier.
He was not replaced, and while that year’s hostless format garnered praise and was even emulated by other awards shows like the Emmys, subsequent Academy Awards were criticized for a lack of focus and humor.
Also on Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that veteran Glenn Weiss would direct the Oscars for the seventh time in a row.
Few details have been confirmed for the show, which will be produced by Will Packer and postponed for a second year in a row.
The delay, ostensibly to avoid collisions with the February Winter Olympics and the Los Angeles Super Bowl, was announced months before the Omicron variant forced several Hollywood shows to cancel in-person events that winter.
