United Nations: India did not join the UN Security Council in voting on Wednesday on the draft of Russia’s resolution on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
Permanent and veto-welding council member Russia called for a vote in the 15-nation Security Council on its draft resolution that “demands that civilians, including humanitarian personnel and persons in vulnerable situations, including women and children, be fully protected”. Calls for dialogue, a ceasefire to enable the safe, rapid, voluntary and unhindered evacuation of civilians, and underscores the need for the parties concerned to agree on humanitarian pauses for this purpose.”
Russia and China voted in favor of the resolution, while India was among 13 countries that did not participate.
India had previously skipped the General Assembly on two occasions in the Security Council and once on the resolutions for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla is visiting the United Nations and addressed a Security Council briefing on cooperation between the United Nations and the League of Arab States, chaired by the UAE President, the Council.
The Russian resolution, which makes no reference to its invasion of Ukraine, calls on all parties concerned to allow safe and unhindered passage without discrimination to destinations outside Ukraine, including foreign nationals, and for those Facilitates safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid. Taking into account the special needs of women, girls, men and boys, older persons and persons with disabilities, the needs of Ukraine and its surroundings.
The Russian Security Council resolution was one of three resolutions on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine that were placed before the UN General Assembly and the Security Council on Wednesday. The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday resumed its 11th emergency special session in Ukraine and considered two resolutions before it.
