ICJ judges vote individually: MEA on Dalveer Bhandari’s vote against Russia

NEW DELHI: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) judges vote in their individual capacity, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday, a day after Indian judge Dalveer Bhandari voted against Russia in the UN Supreme Court.
The International Court of Justice on Wednesday ordered Russia to cease hostilities in Ukraine, acknowledging the measures requested by Kyiv.
The court order was supported by 13 judges, while two voted against it – Vice President Kirill Gevorgian from Russia and Judge Xu Hanqin from China. Justice Dalveer Bhandari of India voted against Russia.
When asked about the vote at a media briefing, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “They (there) are in individual capacities and they vote on its merits. Comment on how judges vote in the ICJ It’s not fair to do that.”
Pressed for a comment, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson reiterated, “He (Justice Bhandari) is an Indian national who is a member of the ICJ in his individual capacity. I am not going to comment on how the judge will address those issues.” Vote what comes out. ICJ.”
