NEW DELHI: Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi told Parliament on Thursday that India’s relations with the US and Russia “stand on its own merit”.
Lekhi was responding to a question whether the month-long war between Ukraine and Russia has affected relations.
“India calls for an immediate end to hostilities and a return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue regarding the conflict in Ukraine,” he said in his statement to the House.
It also said that over the past decade, India has become closer to the US in the face of China’s resurgence across the border, and Russia remains its largest arms supplier.
Analysts say about 60% of India’s military supplies coming from Russia, from rifles to rockets, are more cost-effective than the US.
So far, India is the only major country close to the United States that has not condemned or imposed sanctions on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
