Kriti Sanon wants bigger budgets for films with female protagonists: hopefully this will become the norm
Kriti Sanon has expressed her opinion on films with female protagonists, also known as female-centric films. In a recent interview with a news portal, the Shehzada actress cited Mother India and ChaalBaaz as examples and articulated that there have also been strong and substantial characters for women in the past. She explained that the number of such characters has increased in modern times. In addition, she added that the demand for such roles from the audience and the offer from actors have also increased. Audiences want to see good content regardless of whether the actor is male, female, celebrity or something else, the actress said. However, it is the budgets that have not increased, said Kriti.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Kriti Sanon said there is still room for improvement when it comes to budgets for women-centric films. She explained that Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi might be the only film with a female protagonist shot on such a large scale and said that’s the way it should be. “Sometimes we end up making films with female protagonists on a smaller budget because we don’t think it’s going to do as much business. And it doesn’t end up doing as much business either because it’s made on a smaller scale,” she said.
The 31-year-old actress added: “I want to see that belief and that risk. I hope it becomes the norm.” She added that once the films with female protagonists are shot on a larger scale, they will do better at the box office and that problems such as gender inequality will also disappear.
It should be noted that Kriti 2021 was titled Mimi, where she also played the role of a central female protagonist.
On the work front, she was last seen in Bachchhan Paandey alongside Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi. She now has Ganapath, Bhediya, Adipurush and Shehzada in the pipeline. We recently reported that Kriti has also been hired for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next project alongside Aditya Roy Kapur.
