Ankara:

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told US counterpart Joe Biden on Thursday that mediation of the Ukraine-Russia war was important for Ankara, after top diplomats from both sides held talks in Turkey.

Ankara has close ties with Moscow and Kyiv and on Thursday hosted a historic meeting between Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba and Russia’s Sergei Lavrov in the southern resort city of Antalya.

The talks failed to achieve success on ceasefire or humanitarian issues, but highlighted Turkey’s role as a mediator in the two-week-old war.

Erdogan said being able to speak to both sides and being a “facilitator” for Turkey seeking a resolution to the conflict during a 45-minute telephone call with Biden, according to the Turkish presidency.

The White House said President Biden “expressed admiration” for Turkey’s mediation efforts and the two leaders “reaffirmed their strong support” for Ukraine against a Russian aggression.

Erdogan also sought to lift the “unreasonable sanctions” imposed on his fellow NATO member in 2019 after Turkey adopted the Russian defense system, according to a Turkish presidential statement.

Ankara is looking to acquire 40 F-16 fighter jets and the spare parts needed for the maintenance and modernization of its existing F-16 fleet.

Turkey spent $1.4 billion ordering F-35 stealth fighter jets, but the planes were not delivered after Ankara frozen the contract in 2019 on the purchase of Russia’s S-400 anti-missile defense system .

The system is seen as a threat to the F-35 jet, prompting Washington to pull Turkey out of its state-of-the-art military program.

Turkey has delivered combat drones to its ally Ukraine, but it also wants to maintain good relations with Russia, on which it depends closely for its tourism sector and wheat and energy supplies.
