Coimbatore: R Sainikesh, a 21-year-old aerospace engineering student from Tamil Nadu who joined the Ukrainian paramilitary force to fight Russia, is set to return to his hometown in Coimbatore soon, his father Ravichandran said.
Sainikhesh was studying his final year of aerospace engineering at the National Aerospace University in Kharkiv, Ukraine, when, in February, he joined the Georgian National Legion, a paramilitary unit of volunteers. Sainikesh was rejected twice by the Indian Army because of his height.
“The central government officials are in touch with us and have promised us that they will trace our son and get him out soon,” 52-year-old Ravichandran said over the phone on Saturday. He said he contacted Sainikesh three days ago and his son agreed to return to India soon. And his son soon agreed to return to India. “I have not been able to talk to him for the last three days. The authorities have asked us to get in touch with them anytime. We hope that our son will be evacuated from Ukraine soon. Media reports should not affect his return to India.
However, a police officer said, “When his parents asked Sainikesh to return to India, he did not respond properly. They did not contact the Indian embassy in Ukraine when the war broke out. His address in the war zone was It’s not easy to set up.”
