Demolished crescent shape of the Ganga in Varanasi There is a risk of changing the ecosystem due to the disruption of the natural river Natural

The central government claims that the Ganga is being revived as part of the Namami Gange Project. By cleaning its ghats from Varanasi to Ganga Sagar and cleaning its foothills, it is made useful again from a life and transportation point of view by improving its aquatic life. But Varanasi water experts and nature lovers are concerned that several government projects are obstructing the natural flow of the Ganges. This changes the crescent shape of the Ganges that flows into Varanasi. For this reason, there is also the risk of permanent change in the Ganga ecosystem.Experts fear that by disrupting the natural flow of the Ganges, the building could also have a lasting effect on the direction of the Ganges, which can permanently impair the natural sickle shape of the Ganges in Varanasi.

This can lead to a permanent color change of the Ganges water even in a limited area, which can turn out to be a great threat to the aquatic animals. The government should consider these points before making any major changes.

Mahant Professor Vishwambharnath Mishra from Sankatmochan Mandir shared his views on ‘Kashi Vichar Manch’ and said that Ganga is the medium of life. The 5 km long section that joins the 2525 km life stream of the Ganges in Banaras is of great importance in terms of religion, spirituality, culture and the health of the river.

Recognizing the wonderful importance of Ganga, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi launched the Ganga Action Plan in Benaras in 1986, but subsequent governments showed an interest in renaming the plans and taking unscientific paths. Since 2014, the two major wastewater treatment plants in Dinapur and Satwan have made no significant effort to remove contaminants from Varanasi.

He said that the two tributaries of the Ganges at Benares – the Asi and the Varuna – did the job of regulating the Ganges and naturally removing the mud of the Ganges from the ghats. Now, by taking out a channel between them, they are playing with the Ganges ecosystem, which is going to be very costly to people.

The historian Mohammad Arif said that Ganga cannot be cleaned with money alone. To this end, public participation must become effective. The greatest poet of the nineteenth century, Ghalib, overwhelmed by the sanctity of the Ganges and Banaras, composed this unique work such as “Chirag-e-Dair”, which means “the lamp of the temple”. Akbar and Aurangzeb had hired scientists to purify the waters of the Ganges. In recognition of its medicinal properties, it was considered “Nahar-e-Bisht”, meaning “River of Heaven”.

Environmental activist Rajendra Singh condemned the so-called development model as destructive. He said that Banaras must fearlessly withstand the chaos with the Ganges and that this campaign must be incorporated into daily activities and a new understanding. Banaras is not only the capital of religious rituals, but also of our internationalism.

Rajendra Singh said that when Manmohan Singh was Prime Minister he spoke to us after the mass movement we led and immediately stopped the construction of four dams in Uttarakhand. But the current government is not listening to them.

He related that, inspired by the cleaning of the Stockholm River that flows between the Swedish Parliament and the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Indira Gandhi initiated a campaign at the first World Earth Conference of 72 to clean the rivers from the Ganges themselves, called: ‘Ganga Action’ in 1986. Rajiv Gandhi implemented it in the form of ‘Plan’.

Priyanka had made contact
Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee Vice President Vishwa Vijay Singh told Amar Ujala that when Priyanka Gandhi campaigned for the rights of the Nishads in the past, many Nishads spoke to her about the plight of Ganga. Afterwards, she assured him that she would support his movement in order to preserve the natural nature of the Ganges and to encourage its movement. He said his party was determined to bring back the ancient glorious form of Ganga.
