Bombay:

Mumbai Police today registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh for his nude photos on social media, an official said.

A Mumbai-based non-governmental organization (NGO) had contacted the Chembur police with a complaint against the actor.

On this basis, the police registered the FIR against Mr Singh under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including Sections 292 (Sale of Obscene Books etc.), 293 (Sale of Obscene Items to Young People), 509 (Word, Gesture or Intended Action). decency to insult a woman) and provisions of the Information Technology Act, said an official at the Chembur Police Inspectorate.

An NGO official had claimed the actor had hurt women’s feelings in general and insulted their modesty through his photos, police said earlier.

Multi award-winning Ranveer Singh is known for his roles in films such as Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat and Gully Boy.

Last Thursday, the actor’s nude photos – which were intended for a magazine shoot – were published on his social media accounts including Instagram, according to police.

The NGO and a lawyer later filed separate complaints against the actor at Chembur police station.

The application by the lawyer, a former journalist, had also called for a trial against Mr Singh on charges of outrage at women’s modesty, police previously said.
