David Warner, the veteran British actor who starred in several popular films, has died at the age of 80. The actor has played several famously villainous supporting characters in films such as Titanic and Tron during his illustrious career. CNN reports that Warner died of “a cancer-related illness,” his family confirmed in a statement.

The actor had been ill for 18 months, his family wrote, and “approached his diagnosis with characteristic grace and dignity,” the statement said. Warner’s career has spanned more than 50 years, starring in films of various genres, from horror classics to Oscar-winning films to a Disney musical.

Warner began his career on stage after studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He acted in several productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company and appeared in title roles such as Richard II and Hamlet. The late actor also appeared in the 1968 film adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream alongside Helen Mirren, Judi Dench and Diana Rigg.

Upon hearing of his loss, Lin-Manuel Miranda paid tribute to the late actor, writing on social media, “So glad to have been able to express my admiration for David Warner’s incredible versatility and career during our time on set together. My goodness, what a life and legacy.”

The family statement on David’s legacy said: “He will be greatly missed by us, his family and friends and will be remembered as a kind, generous and compassionate man, partner and father whose legacy of extraordinary work has touched the lives of so many across the Years.”
