Kyiv:

Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova said on Monday that Ukraine has evidence that Russian forces have used banned cluster bombs in two southern regions of the country.

Cluster bombs spread dozens of small explosive charges over an area, some of which may not detonate immediately and actually become mines against personnel who pose a threat to civilians after the conflict ends.

Pressure groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have said they have collected evidence of the use of cluster bombs in areas where civilians in Ukraine were present.

A United Nations treaty concluded in 1997 that banned the use of anti-personnel mines was signed by neither Russia nor the United States, although Ukraine did.

Asked by journalists about the use of such weapons by the Russians in bombing Ukraine’s capital since the invasion began a month ago, Venediktova said she did not have concrete evidence, but that the investigation was ongoing.

“But … we have evidence of the use of cluster bombs in the Odessa region and the Kherson region,” she said.

Russian troops have been blocked from advancing on Ukraine’s main port city of Odessa on the Black Sea.

Kherson is the only major city that has been occupied by Russian forces since the invasion began, but Ukrainian troops have sought to recapture the medium-sized city on the route from Russian-occupied Crimea to Odessa.

Venediktova said journalists were bringing to light cases of possible use of cluster bombs and other banned weapons.

“But … I can only mention instances where I have very solid evidence, for example … when I have (bomb) fragments or soil samples and analysis,” she said, without providing additional details. said.
