North Korea fired 'unknown projectile': Seoul

Pyongyang has doubled down on military development.

Seoul:

North Korea has fired an “unknown projectile”, South Korea’s military said early Sunday, in what will be Pyongyang’s eighth launch this year after a month of peace on the peninsula during the Beijing Olympics.

Pyongyang last month conducted a record-breaking blitz of weapons tests, including its most powerful missile since 2017, when leader Kim Jong Un provoked then-US President Donald Trump with provocative launches.

There were high-profile talks between Trump and Kim, but it collapsed in 2019.

Since then, talks with the US have stalled, and the country has been financially battling international sanctions and a self-imposed coronavirus blockade.

Pyongyang has doubled down on military development, warning last month that it could abandon self-imposed moratoriums on long-range missile and nuclear weapons tests.

“North Korea fired an unidentified projectile eastward,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement without giving further details.

Japan also confirmed Sunday’s launch, with a Defense Ministry spokesman telling AFP that “likely ballistic missiles” were fired from North Korea, without saying how many.

Japan’s Coast Guard issued a warning to ships about a “possible ballistic missile launched from North Korea”.

Analysts have said North Korea halted testing of its weapons during the Winter Olympic Games, possibly in honor of its only major ally, China.

But with the international community distracted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many analysts expected North Korea to seize the opportunity to resume testing.

Japan’s Foreign Minister Masayoshi was talking about Ukraine on live TV when news of the North’s launch broke.

“This situation in Ukraine is not something that just happens in Ukraine or Europe. But it could potentially affect the whole world, or the Indo-Pacific region or East Asia as we think,” he said.

South Korea has said it will engage in international economic sanctions against Russia and as a key US security ally, Seoul is closely watching Washington’s response to Moscow’s aggression, according to local reports.

back to crisis

North Korea’s latest saber-rattle also comes as South Korea prepares to elect its next president on March 9.

Outgoing South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who held frequent peace talks with the North during his five-year term, has warned that the peninsula could easily slip back into trouble.

“If North Korea’s series of missile launches leads to a moratorium on long-range missile tests, the Korean peninsula could immediately return to a state of crisis,” he said in a written interview with the international press. , including AFP, this month.

Talks between Washington and Pyongyang have stalled.

Under Trump’s successor Joe Biden, the United States has repeatedly expressed a desire to meet with North Korean representatives, while saying it would demand denuclearization.

But Pyongyang has so far rejected the proposal, accusing Washington of following “hostile” policies.

Domestically, North Korea is preparing to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the birth of late founder Kim Il Sung in April, which experts say Pyongyang could use for a major weapons test.
