Ukraine War: Girl writes a letter on a large yellow sheet of paper and gives it to her mother to bring to a church to collect aid to be sent to Ukraine and the border areas.
Gioia Maria, a 10-year-old Italian girl, says she would like to do more for the victims of the war in Ukraine “but I’m too young”.
That’s why every night she prays. And she wants Ukrainian children to know it.
The girl wrote a letter in her best English on a large yellow sheet of paper and gave it to her mother to collect food, medicine and clothing to bring to a church to take refugees to Ukraine and the border areas.
“Dear Ukrainian friends, my name is Gioia Maria. And I am Italian. I am very sorry for this terrible war. I am very close to you with all my heart. I want to do more, but I’m too young and too much I am away. Every night I pray for you and I ask God to help you. With love. Gioia Maria.” Six heart signs follow his name.
Her mother, Catherine Valerio, said that Gioia Maria used her savings to buy gifts to send along with the letter to Ukrainian children.
He said, “I have two daughters, one 10 and one 8, and they ask me why all this is happening and above all, they ask me how they can help these kids, ” He said. Volunteers receiving, sorting and packing donations outside the Church of Santa Sofia on the outskirts of Rome.
The Parish for Rome’s Ukrainian Catholic Community has become a magnet for donations from across the Italian capital. The appeal has been so successful that volunteers direct oncoming cars into the parking lot.
“We hope that this war will end as soon as possible. We are concerned because Ukraine is our homeland, the country where we were born and where we hope to return,” said the parish priest Father Marko Yaroslav Semen. “People feel a great sense of injustice.”
Gioia Maria hopes that his letter will help ease some of the pain.
