Sydney:

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Tuesday that Australia has committed $70 million ($50 million) to Ukraine for deadly defensive weapons, including missiles and ammunition.

Australia backtracked last week when it said it would only fund military technical assistance.

Morrison told reporters on Tuesday that the vast majority of new weapons funding for Ukraine would be in the lethal category.

“We’re talking missiles, we’re talking ammunition, we’re talking about supporting them in the defense of their homeland in Ukraine, and we’ll do that in partnership with NATO.”

He said the weapons would be delivered expeditiously, but did not disclose how.

Morrison urged Australians not to travel to join Ukraine’s militia in fighting against Russian forces, saying the legal status of foreign civilian fighters was unclear.

“Don’t do that,” he said.

He said Australia will pledge $35 million in humanitarian aid to international organizations that help the Ukrainians with shelter, food, medical care, water and education.
