5 historical dramas to add to your watchlist

Historical drama is one such genre that can do a great job of moving the audience. Combining fact and fiction, there are many movies in Bollywood that provide an immersive viewing experience. The latest in the list of such films is Emperor Prithviraj, Akshay Kumar starrer which traces the life and times of the great Rajput ruler Prithviraj Samrat. the film is based on Prithviraj RasoAn epic poem in Braj. Emperor Prithviraj Manushi is Chhillar’s first film in the role of Rani Sanyogita. 1. Jodha Akbar – Netflix

Jodha Akbar is a 2008 Hindi-language epic produced and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The film stars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles and stars Sonu Sood, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Ila Arun in pivotal roles. The lead actors experience royalty and display excellent acting skills. The film also has many beautiful sequences which are worth watching.

2. Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi – Amazon Prime Video

This 2019 period drama film is based on the life of Rani Laxmi Bai of Jhansi. The film stars Kangana Ranaut in the lead role and won the National Film Award for Best Actress at the 67th National Film Awards. The film was also released simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu.

3. Bajirao Mastani – Amazon Prime Video

Bajirao Mastani Based on the lives of Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I and his wife Mastani. The film stars real-life husband and wife Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. This legendary work by Sanjay Leela Bhansali also stars Priyanka Chopra in a scintillating act as Kashibai.

4. Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior

The Om Raut film is based on the life of Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare, who was a trusted lieutenant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film stars Ajay Devgan in the lead role of Tanhaji. Ajay’s wife Kajol plays the role of Savitri Bai Malusare, Tanaji’s wife, while Saif Ali Khan plays Udaybhan Singh Rathore, the royal guard of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

5. Mughal-e-Azam

K Asif is considered one of the greatest Bollywood films of all time. Mughal-e-Azam follows the love affair between Anarkali, a court dancer, and the Mughal prince Salim (Emperor Jahangir). Madhubala and Dilip Kumar play Anarkali and Salim respectively, Prithviraj Kapoor plays Emperor Akbar, the primary detractor in this saga of star-crossed lovers.
